Doug Crowder Memorial Roping - May 24th

For 17 years, the long-standing tradition of the Doug Crowder Memorial Team Roping has been held in Bakersfield, California. This year The Thunderhead Ranch in Shafter, California is hosting the event on May 24^th - Memorial Day weekend - a time reserved to respect and honor loved ones that have passed away.

The timing of the event on Memorial Day weekend serves as a reminder that if we are not careful, everyday life can become cluttered with endless obligations and tedious tasks leaving little time for the people who matter the most. Don and Marty Crowder were reminded how fragile and short life can be when their 19-year-old son, Doug, was taken from them in a fatal construction accident the summer after he graduated from high school. Luke Mezich Memorial Roping

“Every storm cloud has a silver lining,” relates the old reliable proverb. The storm clouds rolled in for Steve and Jan Mezich in 1996 when they lost their 22 year-old son, Luke, in a tragic car accident. Searching for the silver lining, Steve and Jan, along with their daughter Lisa and son-in-law Will Schmidt created the Luke Mezich Memorial roping and held it over Father’s Day weekend. The roping brought in $5,000, which was donated to Sparrow Clubs, USA, a non-profit children’s charitable foundation. Read full story.
